    If you've held your Queensland driver's licence for at least two years, you're generally eligible to apply for an HR truck licence. There are three different gearbox types you can apply for:

    1. HR Automatic (Auto) This licence allows you to drive HR vehicles fitted with an automatic transmission.

    2. HR B Condition (Synchromesh Manual) If you already hold a manual car licence, you can complete your HR driving test in an automatic HR truck and you will automatically receive an HR B Condition licence. This is because you've already demonstrated manual gear-changing ability in a car, in effect, you're upgrading your existing manual licence to HR.

    An HR B Condition licence allows you to drive:

    • Automatic trucks

    • Synchromesh (standard manual) trucks

    However, it does not allow you to drive a Road Ranger (crash box/constant mesh) gearbox.

    3. HR Open (Road Ranger / 18-Speed Crash Box) An HR Open licence allows you to drive any type of gearbox, including:

    • Automatic

    • Synchromesh manual

    • Road Ranger (18-speed crash box and other constant-mesh gearboxes)

    Many larger transport companies look very favourably on an Open licence, as it demonstrates a higher level of driving skill and can open up more employment opportunities, it's well respected in the truck industry as the most skilled licence.

    While drivers with an Automatic or B Condition licence can often find work quickly, an Open licence gives you the greatest flexibility, as you're qualified to drive virtually any HR truck.
